Hazardous Waste Disposal - FAQs

Titan Sky Ltd – Safe, Compliant, and Responsible Waste Solutions
1. What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is any material that poses a risk to health or the environment due to its chemical, biological, or physical properties. It must be handled and disposed of in compliance with UK regulations.

2. What are common hazardous waste types?

There are many hazardous waste types from all kinds of industries and even households, that we all use on a daily basis.
Here are some of the common hazardous waste types:

  • Chemical Waste: Acids, alkalis, solvents, paints
  • Heavy Metals: Lead, mercury, cadmium
  • Oil-Contaminated Waste: Used oils, oily rags, filters
  • Batteries: Lead-acid, lithium-ion, Ni-Cd
  • Electrical Equipment (WEEE): Fluorescent lamps, electronics with hazardous components
  • Clinical Waste: Medicines, sharps
  • Asbestos: Insulation boards, roofing
  • Others: Aerosols, contaminated packaging, PCB-containing items, refrigerants and much more
3. What are EWC codes and why are they important?

The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) assigns a six-digit code to each waste type. Hazardous waste codes are marked with an asterisk (*). These codes are required for waste transfer notes and compliance documentation.
Here are some EWC code examples for hazardous waste:

  • Acid-based waste - 06 01 06*
  • Organic solvents - 14 06 03*
  • Lead-acid batteries - 16 06 01*
  • Oil-contaminated absorbents - 15 02 02*
  • Fluorescent tubes (mercury) - 20 01 21*
  • Medicines and pharmaceuticals - 20 01 31*
  • Asbestos-containing material - 17 06 05*
  • Aerosols - 16 05 04*
4. How should hazardous waste be stored and transported?

Hazardous waste must be stored in secure, clearly labelled containers that are compatible with the waste type to prevent leaks or reactions. Containers should be kept in a designated, bunded area away from drains and watercourses, with spill kits readily available. During transport, waste must be accompanied by a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note, and only licensed carriers should be used. Vehicles must be suitable for the waste type, and all packages should comply with ADR regulations for dangerous goods. Proper documentation and segregation are essential to ensure safety and legal compliance throughout the process.

  • Use clearly labelled, sealed containers
  • Store in a designated secure area
  • Complete hazardous waste consignment notes
  • Use licensed carriers and authorised disposal facilities
5. Can I drop off cylinders at your facility?

No, we don't allow drop-offs at our facility. Please call us to arrange a collection to ensure safe handling, transport and compliance with site safety protocols.

6. What happens to the cylinders after collection?

Cylinders are inspected, depressurised, and either refurbished for reuse or recycled as scrap metal. Hazardous residues are treated according to UK waste management standards.

7. Do Titan Sky provide documentation for compliance?

Yes, we issue Waste Transfer Notes and Certificates of Disposal for compliance and audit purposes.

8. Are there any cylinders you do NOT accept?

We do not accept cylinders containing unknown substances or radioactive materials. Please contact us for guidance if you are unsure.

9. How quickly can you collect my cylinders?

Collection is typically arranged within 3–5 working days. However, we can arrange same day or next day collections subject to availability and location.

10. Is your service compliant with UK regulations?

Absolutely. We operate under the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 and adhere to Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines for handling pressurised containers.
